What closing does
An owner opens Settings and chooses Close this account. That starts 30 days. During those 30 days you can still change your mind. On the last day, the account closes and what identifies you in it is erased. That can't be undone.
Only the account's owners can close it. You also need a login from the last 15 minutes; if yours is older, you're asked to log in again first, and brought back.
If you're closing because something doesn't work, tell us first: we'd like the chance to fix it.
Before you close it
Take what you need with you first. Once the account closes, it can't be opened again.
Your databases: export a copy of each one and download it.
Your code: it's in your own Git repository, or the ZIP you uploaded.
Your files: download what your apps saved, like customers' uploads, from the file manager.
Your receipts and statements: save the ones your accountant needs, from Wallet.
Your domains: if a domain uses our nameservers, move it before the account closes. The DNS tab's Export zone file has all its records, for your new DNS host; then change the domain's nameservers where you bought it.
A good order to work in:
Export and download every database.
Download the files your apps saved.
Save receipts and statements from Wallet.
Export the zone file and move your domains.
Only then close the account.
The full guide is at /docs/account/close-account.
Close it
Open the account's Settings.
Under Close this account, choose Close this account.
Type the account's name exactly as it appears, to confirm.
Choose Close in 30 days.
You get an email with the date it closes.
The 30 days
For 30 days, everything stays as it is. The account's settings say when it closes, and who asked. You can't start anything new in it meanwhile.
Changed your mind? Open Settings and choose Keep my account. It's undone at once, and the account carries on as if nothing happened.
Example: Asha closes an old account
Asha once made a second account, Duka Test, to try things out. She doesn't need it any more.
She works through her list:
She exports its one database and downloads the file.
She checks that her code is safe in her own Git repository.
She downloads the files her test app saved from the file manager.
She saves the receipts she needs for her accountant from Wallet.
Duka Test has no domain, so there is nothing to move.
Then she closes it:
She opens Duka Test's Settings.
Under Close this account, she chooses Close this account.
She types "Duka Test", the name exactly as it appears.
She chooses Close in 30 days.
The email gives her the closing date. Her main account, with duka, isn't touched: each account closes on its own.
A week later she realises she still needs a test environment. She opens Settings and chooses Keep my account. It's undone at once, and Duka Test carries on as if nothing happened.
On the day it closes
The account closes, and we erase what identifies people in it:
the account's name;
for each person who belongs to no other open account: their name, email address, phone number, time zone, alerts and notifications, devices, and their login with its passkeys;
the addresses and devices recorded in the account's activity log.
A last email goes to you before your address is erased. The activity log's entries stay, naming nobody, so the history of what happened can still be checked without saying who.
If you belong to another account that stays open, your login stays too, so you can keep using that one. That's why Asha's main account keeps working after Duka Test closes.
