Tanzahost and Heroku compared
How Tanzahost and Heroku differ on paying, sleeping, databases, domains, workers, logs and support, with what Heroku does better. Checked 2026-10-17.
Updated 17 Oct 20264 min readTheir facts were checked on 17 Oct 2026
The biggest difference: Heroku sells each process as a dyno with a fixed monthly price, and Tanzahost charges each app for the memory and processor it really uses, hour by hour, from a prepaid wallet. Heroku has regions in Europe and the United States, a command-line tool, several copies of a process, and add-ons. Tanzahost has more database types built in, scheduled tasks as often as every minute, and protection at the door for every app.
Every fact about Heroku below comes from Heroku's own pages, listed at the end, as they were on 2026-10-17.
Side by side
| Tanzahost | Heroku | |
|---|---|---|
| How you pay | Each app pays for the memory and processor it uses, per hour, from a prepaid wallet you top up by card. You set limits; they cost nothing by themselves. | A fixed price per dyno a month. Eco is $5 a month for a shared pool of 1,000 hours; Basic is $7 a month; Standard-1X $25; Standard-2X $50. |
| Free tier | No free plan. Projects cost nothing; apps and databases pay by the hour for what they use. Our pricing shows any free amount. | No free dyno or free database on the pricing page. |
| Sleeping | Optional for each app: it sleeps after 15 minutes without visits and wakes on the next one. Off by default. A sleeping app pays only for its storage. | Eco dynos sleep after 30 minutes without web traffic. Basic and larger never sleep. |
| Databases | MySQL 8.4, MariaDB 11.8, PostgreSQL 18 with pooling, Valkey 9.2, and shared MySQL for small sites. | Heroku Postgres from $5 a month (Essential-0) and Heroku Key-Value Store from $3 a month (Mini). Others through add-ons. |
| Custom domains and SSL | Your own domains, with SSL issued and renewed by itself. Connect with our nameservers, through Cloudflare, or with records where your DNS is. | Custom domains, with free automatic certificates (Automated Certificate Management). A root domain needs an ALIAS or ANAME record. |
| Locations | One location per project, chosen when you make it. See our locations. | Two Common Runtime regions (Europe and the United States), and ten more for Private Spaces. |
| Build from GitHub | Yes, once our GitHub app is set up (it isn't yet): every push deploys, and pull requests can get previews. A ZIP upload works today. | Yes: automatic deploys from a GitHub branch, and review apps for pull requests. |
| Workers and cron | Up to 5 workers and 10 scheduled tasks per app. Tasks can run every minute, for up to an hour, with each run's output kept. | Any process in the Procfile, such as worker. Heroku Scheduler runs jobs every 10 minutes, hourly or daily, and may skip a run or run it twice. |
| Several copies of an app | Not yet: each app runs one web process. | Yes, except on Eco and Basic dynos, which run one dyno per process type. |
| Logs | Kept 7 days, searchable on the dashboard. Up to 3 log drains per project. | The last 1,500 lines (Cedar), with log drains and add-ons for keeping more. |
| Support | Tickets from the dashboard, with your project's apps and recent errors attached, or the contact page. | Basic Support is free; paid Enterprise Success Plans add faster answers. |
What Heroku does better
Regions in Europe and the United States, and ten more for Private Spaces, for companies that need network isolation.
Several copies of a process. Dynos other than Eco and Basic can run more than one per process type. Tanzahost runs one web process per app today.
A command-line tool you can download today.
heroku logs --tail,heroku configand the rest. Tanzahost's command-line tool has the same everyday commands, but its download opens only with its first release.Add-ons, which plug other services into an app and give it their config vars.
What Tanzahost does differently
You pay for use, not for a size.reading today's priceshow billing works.
A spending cap. Every wallet starts with a monthly cap you can change, so a runaway app can't surprise you. See the spending cap.
More databases built in. MySQL and MariaDB beside PostgreSQL and Valkey, each private to its project, with import, export and a table browser on the dashboard.
Scheduled tasks you can watch. Every minute if you like, with the last 20 runs and their output.
Protection at the door for every app: rate limits, a web firewall (watching only, for now) and a cache for static files.
WordPress and classic PHP sites, with a file manager, next to apps built from code.
What Tanzahost doesn't do yet
Several copies of one app, or one app in several locations.
A command-line tool you can download. Ours is built, and its download opens with its first release; the API and the AI tools server work today.
Connecting with SSH or SFTP from your own computer. The terminal works in the browser.
Mailboxes. Keep your email where it is.
Moving over
Your Procfile, config vars, Postgres data and Scheduler jobs each have a place here. Moving from Heroku goes through it step by step.
