Private names

The apps of a project reach each other at names like api.internal, without leaving the project's own network. The Connected card shows them.

Each app has a private name its project's other apps reach it at: the app's name and .internal, like api.internal. The traffic never leaves the project's own network, and no other project can reach it or look it up.

Asha's project has two apps, web and api. Her web app calls its API at http://api.internal:8080, with no public address and no password at the door.

Find it

Open the app's Overview. The Connected card shows its own private name with its port, each of the project's other apps with theirs, and the databases, caches and storage it uses. Choose a database to see how to connect without leaving the app.

What to know

  • The port is the one the app answers on, usually 8080 (the PORT variable).

  • Databases have private names too: their usual name, and <name>.internal. Connecting an app to a database fills in its variables for you: see Connect an app to a database.

  • A database used by two apps says so everywhere it's shown, like "Shared with web and api".
